About Karen Johnson
My personal journey -
I began my love of weight training after the birth of my first child in 1980. I was 21. I had gained 60 pounds. I took steps to take the weight off, starting with a starvation diet topped off with Jane Fonda aerobic work out tapes. I followed Jane's every step jumping and stepping in the privacy of my own living room. If you are a woman over 40 you know what I am talking about! I lost weight but found myself looking gaunt, soft, flabby and unhealthy. I decided to join a facility that was geared for women. I received some good weight training instruction and within weeks saw a dramatic change. I have been hooked on weight training ever since.
I moved to Olympia in 1996. I decided to build on my passion for and experience in weight training, making it a career. I became certified in nutrition and personal training from American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA). I worked for six years as the nutrition consultant for 3PD Fitness, Inc. There, I had the opportunity to teach, motivate and coach hundreds of men, women and young adults. I helped people reach their weight goals, develop good dietary, health and fitness habits, explore weight training, and train for competition. My focus is on helping people change their lives.
In 2001 I decided to enter a bodybuilding contest. I knew I needed to experience the rigors of the12 week pre-contest diet, cardiovascular workouts, developing a routine, posing and even the painting on of the tanning dye. There I was, mother of four kids with "battle scars" to prove it, competing at age 41. It was an emotional, mental, social and physical challenge. By stepping up on the stage and competing I sought to give women hope and confidence that they too could achieve their goals at any age. Successfully getting into competitive condition also confirmed that diet and nutrition are the keys to achieving the results - a look, strength, weight loss, or reduced body fat - we all want from the hard work we do at the gym. People ask me all the time how long it took me to train for competition. They are shocked to learn the only thing in my life I changed was my diet and body fat percentage! The muscle was always there and still is.
From 3PD Fitness I moved to Gold's Gym as nutrition consultant and personal trainer. After two years and at the urging of my clients I decided to branch out on my own and open up my own training and nutrition studio. Now here we are with Elite Fitness by Karen. It has proven to be a rewarding, positive and enjoyable experience. It does not feel like a job, it is just what I do everyday with people I enjoy.
My clients are my bosses, I don't report to a corporation or the owner of a gym. I love the fact that I work for you!
I am an active member of the Rotary Club of South Puget Sound-Olympia and the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce.
